What is an act of kindness?
|
Kindness – Of a friendly, generous, considerate and hospitable nature, warm hearted and good. Without kindness the world would be a poorer place and with a little more it would be a better one.
Jonny Wilkinson
English rugby union player and member of the England national team

Exhibiting kindness doesn’t cost anything – neither in time nor money. It’s all about consideration for others and by showing kindness you’ll be amazed at what you will get back in return.
Niall Quinn, Sunderland Chairman

Kindness is a wonderful thing
You can't see it, you can't hear it
But it's the most wonderful thing to give.
It's so easy to be kind, and it doesn't cost you anything
So go on, be kind, it'll make you glow inside.
Peter Beardsley
Newcastle United

My definition of kindness is something you say or do for someone without expecting something in return. Kindness is an act that should give you a warm feeling and make you proud of yourself for doing this act.

I am a student at Mortimer Comprehensive and I am 15 years old. My country of origin is the Congo. I came to the United Kingdom in May 07. My story is about a kind boy who helped me when I came as a stranger to this foreign country.
I remember when I first came to this country I felt like an alien from another planet. I missed my sweet friends and I felt like I was living in a dream world. I didn't speak English very well so I felt like a person locked in a prison cell. He gave me a key to unlock me free and that was my liberty. He helped me with everything. I had felt paralysed, unable to move because I didn't know anyone or anywhere and was unable to communicate.
This boy gave me his time unconditionally and showed me some magnificent places here in South Shields. When I saw the breathtaking and beautiful beach I felt the world was like the waves moving towards me. I felt like I was no longer this miserable, lonely person and I was being born again and taking my very first breath of life. He considerately helped me with my English homework and coursework. He was always thinking of me and introduced me to a new friend. It was as if I was an empty bottle that had been replenished. However the thing that affected me the most was how he would escort me each day in his own summer holidays to my summer school placement.

If we have a friend it is like you begin a new life and change from a crawling caterpillar to a beautiful butterfly. Every time I had need of something or needed to know something he was always there for me. When we have a friend, it is as if we have a second hand to support and aid us. You are never alone because you belong to each other.

Kindness is important in every person’s life. If you are kind other people will be the same to you. Kindness is helpful wherever you go. Lots of people were kind to me when I first came to this country. Now I can say that there are more kind people in England than in my country, which is Poland, because it is not always easy to find kind people there. I found kind and helpful people in my new English school very fast. They are not just teachers and staff, but also students. You can meet more people if you are kind. Eventually you will become a better person.
People feel different and better when they know that someone cares about them. It is great if you do good things for other people. Showing kindness is one of those things.
You have to be kind to other people if you expect them to be kind to you. It is not easy to be a kind person. It is always good if you try.
One of the kind stories in my life could be my first visit in the capital city of Poland, Warsaw. I lived in Poznan and we wanted to go to Warsaw to see my older brother.
Poznan is a very charming city. In my city you can find lots of German people. They come there for holidays to see our magnificent museums, which in Poznan is a lot. There are many picturesque views when you go out of the city. We have so many charming, old buildings in the city centre that it takes a few days to see them all.
The weather in Poland is bright, beautiful and warm most of the year. It was summer time so the weather at that time in Poland was very hot. I had gone to Warsaw with my dad when I was 10 years old. We had to get up very early in the morning and catch the train because we didn’t have a car at this time.

We had already travelled for two hours and we had 1 hour and 20 minutes left. Travelling by the train is very boring.
On one of the stations a man came in and sat next to my dad. He looked very friendly and caring. This man was very gentle, likable and unselfish and he even told us a few things about his life. It was weird for us because this man didn’t know anything about us and he told us things which other people probably wouldn’t have told.
He had lived in Warsaw for a quite long time and we didn’t know Warsaw at all. My dad and I had always wanted to go to Warsaw because it is a very impressive, charming and glorious city. We had seen it few times on TV but we had never been there. When we arrived we did not know where we were going because we didn’t know the area surrounding the city centre. For us it was a huge problem.

My usually obliging brother had been unable to come to meet us because he was working. The kind and friendly man told us very clearly how we could get to my brother’s house. He even took the same bus, just to make sure that we wouldn’t get lost. We were very happy that this man helped us because we would never have found my brother’s house without his help.

I started doing yoga with Ms. Kathleen Cunningham, our French teacher, when I was 14. That was Ms. Cunningham’s way of teaching French vocabulary. For me, it worked very effectively. The class imagined we were on a desert island that was like a beautiful, stress free paradise. We listened to calming pipe music and imagined what we could feel, see, hear, smell, touch and taste. This appealed to my style of learning and it worked very effectively for me. It became part of my independent learning style.

Whilst relaxed, learning vocabulary was easier for me and I imagined myself listening to and speaking French on the deserted beach. After a good yoga session, I felt relaxed, chilled and ready to learn. I used to get a buzz better than any alcohol or drug out there.
I went to a revision conference to learn how to revise and I had previously done some yoga with Ms Cunningham. Before that day, I had learned different positions and how to breathe more deeply. I discovered a newfound confidence. I have enjoyed yoga. I love being confident and healthy. I did not always feel that way and struggled a lot at school and had no confidence.
When I used the visualization method I could imagine myself in my “happy place”. This was and is my favorite place in the world. Yoga allows me to visualize it in my head. It is a total stress free procedure that releases all my happy hormones.

In the school summer holidays we had a two-week literacy scheme. This was fun and enjoyable. We also learnt a lot at the same time. We used yoga as a relaxation technique. This was a new experience and was also enjoyable. We used a visualisation technique to relieve our stress. This also helped us to concentrate more on our work. Whilst I was using this yoga, it boosted my confidence in what I was doing and going through and this process gave me so much confidence. This helped me to cope with the pressures of a comprehensive school.
Many thanks for giving me this precious knowledge.
